Book Reviews
Burning Chrome (William Gibson) Several sharp short stories from Gibson's earlist novels. A worn, decrepit world full of wonders. Living is hard even in the future.
Neuromancer (William Gibson) The standard of cyber-punk literature. A great story whose elements have been stolen plenty of times by now, but it was there first to a great deal of what is now mainstream. Visceral descriptions of a post-industrial wasteland where the street finds it's own uses for technology.
Red Storm Rising (Tom Clancy) Growing up in the military-industrial complex, this was my favorite book of the eventual outcome of the cold war, World War III, with enough rosy outcomes to make it a happy ending... but it is a gruesome, bloody battle that missed the obvious outcome of escalation to nuclear war. Only Clancy novel without Ryan ex Machina.
The Sparrow (Mary Doria Russell) A great novel of humanities first encounter with an alien world. Full of excitement and a new take on science fiction.
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell (Susanna Clarke) A fantastic historical fantasy novel intertwined with English society and class.
